Fringe 2007: My artistic Post-Mortem
Since Fringe has been done for nearly three weeks now, I figured it was time to finally put to (web)page my thoughts on my show this year, just like I did last year with A Heap of Broken Images.
When I started toying with the idea of this show, all I knew is that I wanted to find a way to combine music and stories into one cohesive thing. I picked the music first–knowing there were more limitations on that, and the music would require more time than the stories to get ready to show an audience. The problem with the conceit of the show (and the truth) that I use music to tell stories is that all of the songs had certain stories that wanted to be shared in conjunction.
And they were not things that I had ever planned on sharing with an audience.
This is a long post. So click below to read the rest.

The Moleskin in my bag
Each year at the end of Fringe, I buy myself some new pens and a new notebook. End of August / early September has always felt like the beginning of the year to me–Fringe is over, my birthday’s coming, the traditional start of school. A clean slate. A fresh start. A blank notebook.
At Barnes and Noble I found three little black notebooks packaged together by moleskin. Lined (with very skinny lines for my tiny archaic chicken scratch handwriting), black cover, not too many pages, the correct size. I stuck two new pens and a notebook in my bag while I’ve been temping this week. And now it is Friday. And there is nothing in the book.
Maybe it’s just me and my need for perfection, but I have a hard time starting a notebook. It has to be the right word, the thought, the sentence that will propel my ink forward though the pages and the stories. And sometimes it takes a few days or weeks to get that started.
Maybe it’ll help if I get around to posting some thoughts on Fringe and I Hate Kenny G. Then I can put this year behind me, and look for a new sentence to start.

Overheard at work today (2)
“It was the enema, I’m telling you! It wasn’t me it was that cirtic barium solution!”
I didn’t hear the beginning of the conversation. I didn’t hear the response to that. But I think there was an eye-roll involved.

People are kind of dumb
I’m working at a medical supply company playing file clerk and putting together mailings. There are two reasons that the people are not that smart.
- In order to put this 303 piece mailing together, which consists of three levels of life insurance and long term disability, extended optional coverage, 401(k) information, health flexible spending account information, tshirts and post-its, they gave me no less than nine spreadsheets. NINE. On what could have easily been done on one with check boxes to say what to put in each packet. But I don’t get paid for completion, just the hours I spend, so I don’t care.
- In addition to Long Term Disability (LTD), some employees also have Short Term Disability. And the woman just looked at me blankly when I said, “so people can get employer provided STD?” I thought I was funny.

Those Randy Irish
Are at it again. I’m not sure what I heart more about this story:;
- Both involved parties last names are O’Connell.
- They got on at the Sandycove DART station, the closest to the James Joyce Museum which is housed in the Martello Tower used as the inspiration for Ulysses (a very randy book in and of itself, and has a displays of letters written between James and Nora in the museum which I can’t help but wonder if it caused their public randy behavior).
- They each got three-months in prision, except they were both already serving sentences for other offenses.
I love the Irish. Click below for full text of article. Continue reading
